1,3 billion people go trough their life with worms in their small intestine. The worm typically infects you when you eat food (typically pork) containing worm eggs. From your stomach the larva is released, and travels via your blood to the lung tissue.

It is then coughed up, and swallowed – allowing it to find it´s way to your small intestine. This can result in an infection, but world wide there is only about 1500 deaths per year.

So It might not be that dangerous, but it sure is disgusting.
